When is APS available?

APS is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Inspections can be requested, canceled or rescheduled until 7:00 a.m. on the day of the request.

What can I do with APS

With Building Inspections’ new APS, you can:

  • schedule, reschedule or cancel an inspection
  • have inspection results read to you over the phone or sent to you via fax
  • request a fax of your C/O status and the status of all permits related to your job
  • have plan review results read to you over the phone or sent to you via fax
  • listen to our office hours, address, phone number, fax number and Internet address/li>
  • request an application be faxed to you; applications available include all permit applications: residential building, commercial building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, sign and amusement device
  • request a form be faxed to you; forms include: temporary certificate of occupancy, modification, change of use, asbestos certification and accessibility, Chesapeake Bay preservation act, residential resubmittal, commercial resubmittal and public information request

Who do I call if I have a question regarding APS?

If you are using APS, there are several menus that give you the option to press 0 to be transferred to a Building Inspections representative. You may also call the Department of Building Construction and Inspections at (804) 501-4360.

How do I schedule, reschedule, or cancel an inspection?

  1. Dial (804) 755-4300.
  2. Listen to the introductory message, then press 1 for Inspection Options.
  3. Enter your permit type by selecting the corresponding number for the type of permit:
    • Building (BLD) Press 1
    • Mechanical (MEC) Press 2
    • Plumbing (PLM) Press 3
    • Electrical (ELE) Press 4
    • Fire Protection (FIR) Press 5
    • Elevator (ELV) Press 6
    • Sign (SIG) Press 7
  4. Enter your 9-digit permit number. The 9 digits are those numbers following the permit type and including the year (ex: 200601245). If you are calling for an inspection on a permit issued before 7/23/01, please call Building Inspections at (804) 501-4360.
  5. The system will verify the permit number. If the number is correct, press 1. If the number is incorrect, press 2 and return to step 3.
  6. The system will verify the permit address and the permit status.

You will now be listening to one of two “Inspection Options Menus.” The menu you are in depends on the status of your permit. Please listen carefully before selecting an option.

How do I get inspection results and C/O status?

Follow steps 1-6 above.

If you want to hear the results of a particular inspection read to you over the phone, select the option to “hear inspection results.”

If you want the results of all inspections for this permit faxed to you, select the option to “access a menu of fax backs.”

If you entered a building permit number and want the C/O status or the inspections for all permit types related to your job faxed to you, select the option to “access a menu of fax backs.”

Menu of Fax Backs

  • Press 1 for a fax of C/O status. This contains the results of all final inspections for each permit type related to your building permit as well as all other agency inspections, i.e., Planning, Public Works, Public Utilities, Fire and Health.
  • Press 2 for a fax of permit status and inspection history for a specific permit. This contains information for the permit number entered in steps 3 & 4 only.
  • Press 3 for a fax of related permits and their inspection history. This contains the results of all inspections for all permit types related to your building permit.
  • Press 4 for a fax of inspection codes. This contains all code numbers for all inspection types. This information is also contained in this flyer.

How do I get my plan review results?

  1. Dial (804) 755-4300.
  2. Listen to the introductory message, then press 2.
  3. Enter your permit type by selecting the corresponding number for the type of permit:
    • Building (BLD) Press 1
    • Mechanical (MEC) Press 2
    • Plumbing (PLM) Press 3
    • Electrical (ELE) Press 4
    • Fire Protection (FIR) Press 5
    • Elevator (ELV) Press 6
    • Sign (SIG) Press 7

  5. The system will verify the permit number. If the number is correct, press 1. If the number is incorrect, press 2 and return to step 3.
  6. he system will state the permit status.
  7. Press 1 to have plan review details read to you over the phone. Press 2 to have plan review details faxed to you.
  8. Follow the prompts to perform additional tasks.
