Employee Development and Training (ED&T) offers Henrico County Government employees cutting edge, innovative training courses, leadership and customer service certification programs, and career enrichment coaching. The award-winning Leadership Development Program provides a variety of resources to County supervisors, including one-on-one advising, leadership assessments, and training courses customized to the unique needs of employees who lead others. The Customer Service Certification Program offers one-on-one advising and classes with the goal of enhancing service to customers, both internal and external. The Career Enrichment Program provides tools, resources, and guidance to employees as they chart their career paths.
All County employees are eligible to attend the wide variety of courses in the Leadership/Professional Development and Customer Service categories, and managers may attend courses in the Management category. Partnering with several technology-training providers, the Technology courses provide employees with many ways to enhance their skills. The Role of the Supervisor series is an award-winning blended learning program designed to meet the needs of newly-promoted and newly-hired supervisors. Courses in managing conflict, the disciplinary process, feedback and coaching, managing change, and more are part of this required series. When space allows, seasoned supervisors are eligible to attend the courses in this six-day series as well.

Shari Bennett Speer
Shari has been developing workshops and training for over 15 years. She has her bachelor’s degree in both Psychology and English from the University of Virginia and her master’s degree in Adult Education from Central Michigan University. Shari is an LDP advisor and a trainer who is known for incorporating fun and energy into her high-content, highly interactive training sessions. Shari is also an ACE-certified Group Fitness Instructor and teaches indoor cycling and belly dance classes. When not at work, she performs regularly with her husband’s band BALKANIZE! and with her two dance troupes, Shimmy Mischief and The Rogue Belly Dance Collective.

Sheryn Holinsworth
Sheryn has worked as a trainer and employment counselor for over 20 years, first in California and then later after returning to Virginia. She has been with the County since 1992 and received her master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in Adult Education with an emphasis in Human Resources Development and Career Counseling. Sheryn coordinates the County’s award-winning Leadership Development Program. On most Sunday afternoons, you’ll find Sheryn performing with the In the Mood Dancers at area nursing homes. Her favorite quote is “Happiness is a choice, not an accident.”

Debbie Lumpkin
Debbie has worked in ED&T for over three years and serves as the registrar for all of ED&T’s training as well as assisting with the coordination of the Technology Training Program. Debbie is one of the trainers for New Employee Orientation and teaches customer service classes. She has achieved Emeritus level in the Customer Service Certification Program and is active in the Leadership Development Program. Prior to joining ED&T, she worked with graphic design, desktop publishing, and database and project management in Library’s Marketing and Public Relations section. When not at work, Debbie enjoys a good workout and is also AFAA certified to teach group exercise. She also plays softball, watches Indy car racing, and makes jewelry.

Nancy Outlaw
Nancy has over 18 years of experience in training and management. She co-coordinates the New Employee Orientation Program, is an advisor for the Leadership Development and Customer Service Certification Programs, and teaches classes in customer service, leadership, communication, and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. She has her Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Texas State University and is a member of the American Society for Training and Development, Richmond Chapter. Nancy’s spare time is spent singing in choir, reading, and enjoying time with family.

Charlene Redman
Charlene Redman has the smiling face that greets you when you visit ED&T. Charlene is in charge of all of ED&T’s desktop publishing and manages the HR Resources Library. She has also served as the Assistant Editor of the HR Leadership Link. Charlene has a Certificate in Clerical Studies from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and is a member of the Old Dominion Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals. Charlene’s spare time is spent with her family, the Red Hats Society, gardening, and playing with her granddaughter Arihanna and her dog Daisy.

Kim Schenk
Kim has over 15 years experience in training, leadership development, and coaching. She has her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Virginia and her master’s degree in Adult Education and Human Resource Development from George Washington University. Kim has been with the County since 2006 when she joined the HRMS/STEP project to lead the change management efforts. Kim is an advisor in the LDP and assists in the Career Enrichment program. In her spare time, she enjoys doing voice-overs, participating in local theatre and dance, and she performs with the Henrico Pops Chorus and the Henrico Harmonizers.

Rebecca Slough
Rebecca has been training for over nine years and has over 12 years of experience in the human resources field. She coordinates the County’s Customer Service Certification Program and is project manager for several programs and events in ED&T. She is also a trainer who specializes in team building, communication, and customer service. Rebecca has her bachelor’s degree in Recreation and Leisure from Ferrum College. In her spare time, she can be found at the baseball field with her three boys where she is a team mom, serves as the Glen Allen Youth Athletic Association’s 2011 14-year old World Series Tournament Director, and frequently helps out in concessions.

Deborah Warner
Deborah has over 20 years of experience in workforce development. She has her bachelor’s degree in Organizational Behavior from University of San Francisco and her master’s degree in Career Development from John F. Kennedy University. Deborah coordinates the Career Enrichment Program and Technology Training Program and is an advisor in the Leadership Development Program. One of Deborah’s favorite quotes is by Antoine de Saint-Exupery: “Here is my secret. It is very simple: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
