The Henrico County Fitness and Wellness Program is administered by the Department of Human Resources and offers FREE fitness and wellness services to Henrico County employees. Being active and physically fit improves the overall health and well-being of the Henrico County employee population. Through the Fitness and Wellness program, you can exercise on your own using the equipment in the weight room, attend fitness classes, or schedule a fitness training appointment with a fitness trainer.

Vision: A wellness culture enabling employees to take care of themselves and others by eating right, exercising often, and having fun.

Mission: To make a difference in the health and well-being of our employees and the workplace by changing individual behaviors and creating effective partnerships both at work and at home to promote a culture of wellness.

Summer Challenge:
Boost Your Numbers
"5-5-8-8"

This summer’s challenge is for all participants to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, complete 30 minutes of exercise 5 times per week, drink 8 glasses of water per day, and get 8 hours of sleep each night.

All participants will track their progress on the Weekly Log sheet provided.

For each week you meet the “5-5-8-8” Boost Your Numbers goals you will receive an entry in a drawing to win your choice of the following prizes: IPOD Shuffle; two all-day tickets to Kings Dominion; or a family 4-pack to the Virginia Beach Aquarium.

Fitness/Wellness Certification Program

The Fitness/Wellness Certification program lays the path for improved health, fitness and well-being. Over the course of 9 months (August 2010 –April 2011) participants will be exposed to and encouraged to participate in a variety of Department of Human Resources’ Fitness/Wellness Division activities.

Each hour an employee spends engaged in an approved program is counted and credited towards the employee’s Certificate in Fitness/Wellness. Three certificate levels allow for employees to achieve success based on individual goals, schedules and time commitments.

Here is what pilot program participants achieved between August and November 2009:

  • 580 pounds lost
  • 14% decrease in heart rate
  • 27% increase in muscular strength
  • 35% increase in muscular endurance
  • 9% increase in low-back/hamstring flexibility
  • 34% improvement in HDL (good cholesterol)

10K Training

Are you planning to participate in a 10K Run? Will this be your first 10K or do you want to compete for placement? Whether you are a beginner or advanced, a good training plan is the best way to reach your 10K goals.
