Winter/Spring 2010

These programs include a wide range of ages so you and your family (and friends) can attend together.

Registration Notes:

  • All those attending a program (that requires registration) must be listed on the registration form along with the required assumption of liability signatures.
  • Please register at least one week prior to the start date!
  • For additional registration information, see the Registration page.

Online Registration for Free Programs:
Registration for free programs (that require registration) is available online. Go to the online registration page to set up an online account with Recreation and Parks. Once you have an account, you will be able to register online for these free programs beginning January 23 at 8 a.m.

Instructors:
Unless listed otherwise, programs are taught by Recreation Staff. All fitness, dance, and sports programs are taught by instructors who are nationally certified in their area(s) of expertise.

If you have a disability and will need assistance or special accommodations in order to enjoy any of these programs or events, call Therapeutic Recreation at 501-5112 no later than ten working days prior to the program date. Dance & Fitness

Karate (Beginner and Ongoing)
For ages 10 and older. This course offers the fundamentals of karate at all levels with an emphasis on movement, control, and mental discipline. Karate is an excellent form of self-defense as well as exercise. Instructor: Tammy LaBrie. Information: Cathy Clifton, 501-5812.

Taekwondo for Families
For ages 5 and older. Registration of a paying adult is required. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art of self-defense. This class will teach all required techniques of the Korean Taekwondo Association. Family Climb Time
For ages 6 and older. Registration of a paying adult is required with children under 16. Spend time with your family learning the ropes at the YMCA Adventure Center Climbing Wall. Participants 13 and older are instructed on belay techniques, while children younger than 13 are instructed on proper climbing procedures. YMCA membership not required. Instructor: Jay Dempsey. Dancing in the Trees! (Recreational Tree Climbing)
For ages 8 and older. For the young and the young at heart, recreational tree climbing is one of the fastest growing sports around! World Tai Chi Day
For all ages. On the last Saturday of April each year, World Tai Chi Day is celebrated in hundreds of cities around the world! History

Victorian Valentines

For ages 10 and older. Blacksmithing: Too Many Irons in the Fire

A History of Women at the Clarke-Palmore House

A Sewing Lesson
For ages 10 and older. Sewing was an important part of a 19th-century girl's education. Dress in period clothing and take a lesson from "Mrs. Sheppard." Life at Headquarters

The Common Soldier of the Civil War

African-American Soldiers in the Civil War
For all ages. On September 29, 1864, fourteen African Americans won the Medal of Honor in the fields of eastern Henrico County. See how these soldiers were trained, learn how they lived in camp and on the battlefield, and appreciate the trials they experienced during the American Civil War. Sheep to Shawl: Moving In
For all ages. Along with Sheep to Shawl, Meadow Farm is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its historic farmhouse. Meet the family that lived in the home when it was first built and enjoy some traditional activities from 1810. Try your hand at processing sheep's wool, including carding, weaving, and spinning. Terra Cotta People

Montpelier and Monticello
For ages 6 and older. Registration of a paying adult is required with children under 16. Nestled among the mountains are Jefferson's Monticello and James Madison's Montpelier. Begin the day with a guided tour of the completely restored Montpelier. Enjoy lunch at the ever-popular Michie Tavern, a Virginia Historic Landmark. Spend the afternoon at beautiful Monticello, an architectural masterpiece. Tour includes round-trip motor coach transportation, lunch, admission to sites, refreshments, and driver gratuity. The James River

The James River is one of the area's most treasured resources. This asset was highlighted in a series titled the "James River Journal" by environmental reporter Rex Springston and photographer P. Kevin Morley. This ran in the Richmond Times-Dispatch from November 2008 through October 2009 and has since been made into a book: "James River Journal: A Year in the Life of a River." Join us as Springston and Morley present their series, as well as other environmental issues pertaining to the river that runs through our backyards.

Christmas in Patagonia

During Christmas 2008, students and faculty from Longwood University embarked on an adventure of a lifetime! The group trekked among the blue lakes, vast glaciers, and amazing granite spires of Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chile. Then it was off to Pucon, Chile, to climb an active volcano, zip-line through the trees, and visit remote areas by horseback and mountain bike. The group volunteered with the Mapuche tribe and built trails with CONAF (National Park System). Hear all about this spectacular adventure! Presented by Dr. Rená Koesler of Longwood University and Dan Caston of Ferrum College.
