Glen Allen Day
For all ages. The Glen Allen Ruritan Club in association with the Division of Recreation and Parks will host Glen Allen Day, one of Henrico County's largest outdoor festivals, on September 18. This year's theme is "Living Healthy." Celebrating 14 years, Glen Allen Day festivities will include a community parade at 9:30 a.m. beginning at the intersection of John Cussons Road and Mountain Road and continuing down Mountain Road to Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park. Activities in the park include children's activities, balloons by Miss Sheri the Clown, an arts and crafts and business fair, a live petting zoo, train rides, a classic car show, and live musical entertainment featuring local musicians on two stages. Refreshments will be available for purchase at an outdoor food court. Bark in the Park
For all ages. The Division of Recreation and Parks is teaming up with the Henrico Humane Society to offer its 4th Annual Bark in the Park. Bring your best furry friend out and enjoy a day of fun-filled family activities. Enjoy musical entertainment by Random Play, who will keep the crowd entertained with their perfectly blended mix of pop rock! Activities include a 2K walk with your pup, expo of local vendors providing products and services for your favorite pets, a pet costume contest, children's activities, and more! The first 200 dogs registered for the 2K will receive a free bandana. There is a $25 registration fee for the 2K for Paws Walk. Harvest Festival
For all ages. Harvest Festival 2010 will be an a‘maize’ing event that will kick-off the commemoration of Henrico County’s 400th Anniversary! The theme of this year’s festival is corn. Learn everything you ever wanted to know about corn and its many uses throughout history. The Harvest Festival will feature many hands on activities and demonstrations of typical homemaking and farming tasks of the era such as cider making, candle dipping, bee keeping, blacksmithing, woodworking, and a natural dye demonstration. Some additional a‘maize’ing activities include corn husking contests, corn shelling, and popcorn sampling. Children ages 3-12 can visit the Great Pumpkin Patch of Meadow Farm and take part in gourd decorating and cornhusk doll making. Live music and dance will include cloggers, local school groups, a Mass Gospel Choir of Henrico, and performances by the Hackensaw boys and The Runaway String Band. Monster Mash
For all ages. Celebrate the Halloween spirit with the ghosts of Dorey Park. Activities include hair raising arts and crafts, frighteningly spooky contests and games, and rocking monster music! The Mountain Road Corridor Holiday Celebration
For all ages. The Division of Recreation and Parks and The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen cordially invite you to attend a holiday celebration on Mountain Road. Take a tour down Mountain Road, starting with historic Courtney Road Service Station. Proceed down the corridor to the early 19th-century Forest Lodge Cupola. Enjoy an open house at Walkerton Tavern and attend the annual tree lighting ceremony at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. Finish the day with historical lantern tours at Meadow Farm Museum. Holiday on Parade, an Eastern Henrico Celebration
For all ages. Spend the day soaking in the holiday spirit of Henrico's East End. Children can enjoy a craft and bake holiday cookies at Hidden Creek Recreation Center. Take a trip down memory lane at the Clarke-Palmore House, decked out with vintage 1930-40's holiday decorations and sounds of the season. Enjoy sweet treats and make a vintage holiday decoration to take home! Tour The Armour House, a 1917 country estate, and enjoy mantlepieces and trees adorned with period holiday decorations. Children's craft activities and refreshments will surely put you in the spirit of the season. Take in a show at the Henrico Theatre and wrap up the evening at the James River Parade of Lights. You won't want to miss the annual James River Parade of Lights sponsored by the James River Advisory Commission in cooperation with Henrico Recreation and Parks. Henrico County's viewing celebration will take place at Osborne Park. Join us around the bonfire as we enjoy holiday music and activities to celebrate the magic of the season. Beginning at 3 p.m. a toy parade sponsored by the Battlefield Ruritans will precede the Parade of Lights. Entertainment and concessions will follow the toy parade. Hunt for Henrico History
For all ages. Join us for a unique look at Henrico County's past as we commemorate our diverse history with a day of living history presentations and unique historic displays highlighting Henrico neighborhoods, schools, churches, and civic organizations along with special activities for kids. Take part as we capture the personal side of Henrico's history with a unique "show and tell" project when you bring in a family photograph, document, or memento. You'll have the opportunity to have this memorabilia photographed or scanned for inclusion in a public archive preserving our collective histories.
