Public roadways within the County are maintained either by the Virginia Department of Transportation or Henrico County. Roadways which are designated as interstate routes (I-64, I-95, I-295,I-895, etc.) U.S. Highways (U.S. Route 250 - Broad Street; U.S. Route 60 - Williamsburg Road, etc.) and Virginia primary routes (Virginia Route 6 - Patterson Avenue; Virginia Route 5 - New Market Road, etc.) are maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The Sandston Residency of the Virginia Department of Transportation can be contacted at 328-3044 if you have comments or questions relating to State maintained roadways. All other public roadways within Henrico County are maintained by the Henrico County Department of Public Works. What are the criteria for installing traffic signals in the County?

Traffic signals are installed at public intersections when an intersection meets a minimum warrant, or minimum criteria for traffic signal installation. Traffic signal studies are conducted to determine if the intersection meets the minimum criteria. Contact the Traffic Engineering Division at 501-4397 if you are interested having an intersection reviewed to determine if a traffic signal should be installed.

 

Whom should I contact if I have a drainage problem?

The location and type of the drainage problem will determine whether or not Henrico County has any responsibility for the drainage problem, or can get involved with the issue. Contact the Road Maintenance Division at 727-8300 for information as to whether your specific issue can be addressed by the County.

 

How can I get a drainage pipe installed in the front of my yard to enclose an existing ditch, or provide a driveway?

The enclosure of a roadside ditch on a County maintained public road is a common request within single family residential neighborhoods. County policy prohibits the installation of additional storm sewer pipe in front of any single family lot that is located within a subdivision approved after October 14, 1981. Pipe may be permitted to be installed in a roadside ditch for the purpose of a new driveway in subdivisions approved after October 14, 1981.

The length of pipe for a driveway cannot exceed 40 feet. A review of the specific lot will be made for any single family lots which does not fall into the above-mentioned category to determine whether the existing ditch can be enclosed. Contact the Road Maintenance Division at 727-8300 for additional information relating to the cost responsibilities a property owner would have to bear for the installation of the pipe, as well as to request a review of a specific lot.

 

Whom do I call to report a traffic sign that is down and need in maintenance, or to request the installation of a new traffic sign?

The Traffic Engineering Division is responsible for the installation and maintenance of traffic control signing on County roadways. Contact the Traffic Engineering Operations Center at 727-8282 to report the need for sign maintenance or to request additional traffic control signs on County roads. Contact the Virginia Department of Transportation at 328-3044 to request sign maintenance or sign installation on State maintained roadways.

 

Whom do I contact to report a traffic signal malfunction?

Contact the Traffic Engineering Division at 501-4397 to report a traffic signal malfunction at a County maintained intersection. Traffic signal malfunctions or problems at intersections maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation, or where a State maintained roadway intersects another roadway, can be reported to the Sandston Residency Office at 328-3044.

 

Whom do I contact for leaf pick-up?

A leaf vacuum service is available for residents within the County. Residents must rake or bring leaves to the roadside for pick-up. There is a $30.00 charge per order for this vacuum service. Please have this done before you request to be scheduled for leaf pick-up. You may place your order for leaf vacuum service by calling 501-4275. Your leaves will be collected as soon as possible after your order is received. Delays may be experienced due to weather conditions or the heavy volumes of orders. Free, bagged leaf collection is available through the Department of Public Utilities. Bagged leaf collection is available only in certain areas of the County. Whom do I contact to have potholes filled or the ditches in front of my house cleaned?

Residents who live west of Richmond-Henrico Turnpike should contact 727-8300 for a review of the ditch conditions in front of your home. Residents living east of Richmond-Henrico Turnpike should contact 652-3975 for this same review.

 

Whom do I contact concerning a sight distance problem at an intersection?

County code requires that specific areas be kept clear to provide visibility for motorists at intersections. The Traffic Engineering Division is responsible for investigating sight distance problems at County intersections. Sight distance problems can be reported to the Traffic Engineering Operations Center at 727-8282 or by email at publicworks@co.henrico.va.us
