How do I apply for financial benefits from Social Services?
Henrico Social Services conducts intake at their two sites (8600 Dixon Powers Drive and 3820 Nine Mile Road) Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Applications may be filed every day to protect the date of the application, which impacts the amount of benefits for the first month, if eligible.
Financial services cover the programs of TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), actual cash payments based on income and household size, Medicaid (coverage for medical needs) and food stamps. What is the VIEW program?
VIEW (Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare) is the work component of the TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) program. Caretakers who have children over the age of 12 months must register for this work program and complete the requirements, to continue their eligibility for assistance.
What type of rental assistance is available from Henrico Social Services?

What medication assistance is available for the general population (whether elderly, disabled or not)?
Henrico County Social Services (804-501-4001) provides medications for eligible persons with a life-threatening situation. To apply for medication assistance the citizen must provide a physician’s statement that the condition is life threatening. The patient must also have the specified medication in a pharmacy container or have a copy of the prescription. This will allow the agency to make arrangements with a pharmacy if medication assistance is approved. The agency CANNOT pay for any narcotic medications. Eligible citizens may receive medical assistance only once in a twelve-month period.
What is State-Local Hospitalization?
State-Local Hospitalization provides direct payment to hospitals for individuals who are unable to pay for required medical services. Medical services are limited to hospitalization, outpatient surgery, emergency room visits and health department visits. Eligibility for the program is based on income and resources. Can the county provide transportation to a doctor’s office for someone who can’t get there otherwise?

How long does it take to receive my Medicaid card?
The application process is 45 days from the date filed with Henrico Social Services, (804) 501-4003.

I am working. Can I use CVAN (Central Virginia Area Network System)?
CVAN, operated by the Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC), is a no-charge service provided to Social Services Department participants who receive or have received TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). CVAN provides transportation to employment, activities leading to employment and child care facilities. Those eligible for CVAN must be referred by a local department of social services.
What is the Christmas Mother program?
The Henrico Christmas Mother program provides clothing, toys and other needed items to local families during the holiday season. The program is run through the County, with referrals from the Social Services Department. Applications are accepted from all citizens. The program runs each year during the month of November.
