What do I do to see about getting food stamps?
You should call Social Services at (804) 501-4001. The office is in the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive, at the Government Center.

How long does it take to receive food stamps?
The processing timeframe depends upon the household circumstances. If a person is screened as “expedited” (monthly income of equal to or less than $150 and resources not exceeding $100), benefits are processed in seven days. If a person is screened as “normal processing” (not expedited), an initial 30-day time frame is utilized for processing.

Note that if you do not return all required verifications, an extension of an additional 30 days is given; however, you would lose the benefits from the first 30 days of the application period.

Will I receive actual food “stamps”?
Food stamps are electronic benefits that can be used like cash to buy food at any store displaying the Cardinal Card or the Quest sign. Each household will receive a debit card that is used like an ordinary credit or debit card at the grocery store or other valid vendor. The card will have a dollar value determined by the household income and number of deductions.

What products may I purchase with food stamps?
You can use food stamps to buy food or seeds and plants to grow food in your home garden. You CANNOT buy: alcoholic beverages or tobacco, hot foods ready for immediate consumption or foods to be eaten in the store, pet foods, soap or paper products or other non-food items. You may not use food stamps to pay former grocery bills.

Will I pay sales tax on what I buy using food stamps?
You will not be charged sales tax on food items paid for with food stamps.

What if I receive food stamps but cannot go to the store myself?
You may name an “authorized representative” to shop for you. You must write a note to Henrico Social Services that will be verified with you, or you may name a substitute on the application form.
