You may be advised to visit the Intake office at the Court Service Unit to talk to an Intake Officer about your complaint. Contact the Division of Police at (804) 501-5000. A Police Officer will be dispatched to take your report and an investigator may be assigned to the case.

You may call the Police Internal Affairs directly at (804) 501-4834, or call (804) 501-5000 and ask to speak with a supervisor.

If I make a complaint against a police officer, does Internal Affairs have to investigate it?
No. In cases in which a formal complaint is not requested, complaints are listed as “preliminary” and are handled by the officer’s supervisor.

 

How do I check on the status of my complaint against a police officer?
The Police Internal Affairs attempts to reach a conclusion about a particular officer’s actions within 60 days after the initial complaint has been filed. However, there are some occasions in which it can take 90 days or longer to reach a conclusion. You may call Police Internal Affairs at (804) 501-4834 anytime to check on the status of your complaint.

 

If I’m not satisfied with the findings of a police internal investigation, what can I do?
You can contact the Commander of the Police Internal Affairs Unit at (804) 501-4834. If your concerns are not addressed to your satisfaction, you will be provided with additional contact information.

How do I make a traffic complaint?
If you have complaints about motorists who speed through your neighborhood or have other traffic safety issues, there are steps you can take to correct these situations. The most efficient way to address your traffic safety problems is to either call the Special Enforcement Unit at (804) 328-2573, ext. 2223, or e-mail to report your complaint. (Of course, in emergency situations, you should always call 911.)

 

How long does it take for a police officer to come out on a traffic complaint (such as speeding in the neighborhood)?
Once the complaint is called in, it is assigned to an officer over a 30-day period. The officer will come out on different days during the times specified.
