Recruitment Process Overview
- Submission of a County of Henrico online job application. I-Recruitment (applications here) Accepted online only.
- Written test - a cutoff score will be determined and those above it will be invited to the CPAT.
- Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). Applicants must sign waiver forms prior to taking the CPAT.
- Experience, Professional Certification, DMV record and Police records will be checked by Human Resources. (Any candidate that has not resided in the Commonwealth of Virginia continuously for the past 5 years shall provide a DMV record from the state in which he/she resided.)
- A certified list is then sent to the Fire Department from Human Resources
- Interview by Division of Fire Interview Board.
- Conditional job offer is made to the top qualified candidates.
- Medical examination administered.
- Selection of the most qualified applicants will be made from evaluation of above
Requirements
- Minimum age: 18 years of age. No upper age limit; however, applicants must successfully pass a CPAT test.
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Possession of a valid Virginia Operator's License with a Division of Motor Vehicle record of no more than six demerit points in one year, or nine demerit points in two years
Job Duties
A firefighter performs many jobs during their career. Below are a few of the job duties performed:
- Daily station, apparatus, and equipment checks, cleaning and upkeep.
- Respond to Fire and EMS calls and enter reports into computer.
- All firefighters (ALS and BLS) work as attendants in charge for EMS transports.
- Extinguish fires.
- Fire Prevention activities such as business inspections, tours and DEMO'S.
- Continuing education and ongoing training.
