Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA)

What is Family Medical Leave?

The federal Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides eligible employees with job protection and benefit coverage entitlement during leave (either paid or unpaid) for certain family and medical reasons. Eligible employees with approved Family Medical Leave may take up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave (paid or unpaid) in a 12-month period. The County provides an additional one week of Family Medical Leave, for a total of 13 weeks.

The FMLA contains provisions on employer coverage; employee eligibility for benefits; entitlement to leave, maintenance of health benefits during leave, and job restoration after leave; notice and certification of the need for FMLA leave; and, protection for employees who request to take FMLA leave.
