Environmental Program

Environmental Policy Statement

The County of Henrico has adopted an Environmental Policy Statement for County government operations and facilities. This statement provides the framework by which the County’s environmental efforts are conducted and focuses on three areas:

  • Environmental Compliance
  • Pollution Prevention
  • Continual Improvement

All persons working for the County of Henrico are required to abide by this Environmental Policy Statement (PDF).

Environmental & Sustainability Management System

An Environmental & Sustainability Management System (ESMS) provides the tools to manage environmental compliance efforts and reduce environmental impacts efficiently and effectively. It also allows an operation to identify, set, and achieve compliance and sustainability related goals.

Several ESMS teams have been recognized by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) Virginia Environmental Excellence Program (VEEP). This program encourages and recognizes operations with superior environmental performance.

The following operations with an ESMS have been recognized by DEQ’s VEEP:

  • Department of Public Works Traffic Engineering Division – VEEP E3 Level
  • Department of General Services Central Automotive Maintenance Division – VEEP E3 Level
  • Schools Construction and Maintenance – VEEP E3 Level

Additionally, Schools Construction and Maintenance (C&M) was recognized as a Silver Medal winner of the 2013 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award. This prestigious recognition was awarded to C&M based on their Sustainability Program.

Environmental Training

In order for the County to have a successful Environmental Program, we must have properly trained employees. Employee training may be regulatory based or required by the County as a best management practice.

Project Management

Successful project management involves maintaining effective communication while completing projects in a timely and thorough manner. It is important that all local, state, and federal environmental regulations are met when completing environmental projects.

Compliance Inspections

In order to ensure that County operations are following environmental regulations, environmental compliance inspections are conducted. These visits can either be informal visits conducted with no prior notice or formal visits using an inspection form. Inspections can be conducted by County personnel or by a third party contractor.
