The Keep Henrico Beautiful (KHB) program under the Department of Public Utilities has received a first-place award from Keep Virginia Beautiful in the Litter Prevention-Government Agency category for creating and producing an environmentally themed bulletin board kit that targets students in kindergarten through second grade. The kit focuses on five topics – reduce, reuse, recycle, environmental care, and litter prevention – and includes a banner, vocabulary words, and accompanying graphics. Designed to complement
Virginia’s Standards of Learning, the kit has been distributed free of charge to every K-2 public school classroom in . Mr. Hazelett recognized Megan Brown, Executive Coordinator of KHB; Arthur Petrini, Director of Public Utilities; and Lynn Yurchak, Chairperson of the KHB Committee. Henrico County
Vincent Lofton, who has served as Chief Operator of the County’s Water Treatment Plant since 2002, has received the Edward H. Ruehl Operator of the Year Award from the Virginia Section of the American Water Works Association. The award is given annually to a currently employed water works operator in the
who has been licensed for at least five years. An operator for more than 20 years in the water and wastewater industry, Mr. Lofton has earned accolades for coordinating spill response and hazardous materials disposal activities, working on optimization of filtration systems, and improving safety and efficiency. Mr. Donati reported that he attended a Capital Region Airport Commission meeting earlier in the day, at which time the Commission received an economic impact study of
conducted by Chmura Economics & Analytics. The airport’s annual economic impact on the Richmond International Airport region is approximately $800 million and the airport is responsible for almost 9,200 jobs. Although the airline industry’s enplanements are currently down 15 percent, the airport’s enplanements are down only 8 percent. A new master plan for the airport unveiled at the meeting projects a new parallel runway in the year 2026 that will be contained on the airport property rather than interrupting the rural character of the Varina community. Mr. Donati also reported that he had the privilege of visiting
Yangju City, Koreathe previous weekend along with the County’s Legislative Liaison, Mike Schnurman, to deliver the Sister Cityagreement between and Yangju. The presentation was made on Yangju’s Public Day in front of approximately 2,000 persons. Mr. Donati noted that Yangju officials are very excited about and impressed by this Henrico County relationship and will be sending a delegation to Henrico next month to work on exchanges between the two localities. Mrs. O’Bannon commented that she and Mr. Thornton as well as Mr. Hazelett were out of the country the previous week visiting Henrico’s sister county in
Germany(Saarpfalz-Kreis) and the German Bundestag in . The Henrico delegation learned a lot about environmental issues and how to keep items out of landfills. While in Europe, the delegation also visited its sister county in England (Essex) to prepare for and promote Henrico County’s 400th anniversary celebration in 2011 and learned that the Virginia Municipal League will hold its 2011 annual conference in Henrico. Mrs. O’Bannon pointed out that German and English officials who will be travelling to Henrico for the 2011 celebration will be using Berlin . Richmond International Airport
