Maintain vaccinations on domestic animals
County Ordinance requires that all domestic cats and dogs be vaccinated for rabies. Also remember: if you see any wildlife, leave it alone. If the animal appears to be aggressive or is acting strangely, contact Henrico Police immediately. Call 501-5000 or in emergency situations call 911.
Henrico’s Animal Protection Officers are sworn in as Animal Protection Police Officers. These sworn personnel have full arrest powers, the same as any other police officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This authority enables them to be more effective in enforcing state and local animal laws as well as other criminal offenses they may encounter in the course of their duties. This classification gives our officers complete legal authority in wildlife and game violation issues as well.
The Animal Protection Unit is comprised of highly trained supervisors, officers, and civilian staff members who provide the following services to Henrico County citizens:
• Care to rescued animals
• Rabies shots clinics four times annually
• Animal rescue (abused, lost, or stray animals)
• Education and training on the following topics:
• Pet owner pet care/civic responsibility
• Pet disease prevention and proactive health care
• Customized programs for your group or organization

Henrico County dog tags are issued as permanent tags. The numbered tag you receive at the time of purchase will be kept throughout the life of your dog unless it is lost, stolen or destroyed. When your dog’s rabies vaccine expires you will be paying to renew your permanent numbered tag. The license expiration will run concurrent with the rabies vaccine. 1 year or less $10.00 *The tag and license are not prorated, non-transferable and non-refundable |
