Fairfield District Supervisor Frank J. Thornton will host a tour of Henrico's Wastewater Treatment Plant at his next constituent meeting on Monday, October 7. Buses will leave promptly at 6:30 p.m. from Belmont Recreation Center, 1600 Hilliard Road.

"Once we reach the facility, Henrico Public Utilities staff will be available to answer any questions our Fairfield residents might have," Thornton said. "I think it will be a very informative tour, particularly for those people who are unfamiliar with the intricate process involved in treating the county's wastewater," he said.

Fairfield District town meetings are open to the public.

The Henrico County Health Department will hold special clinics to offer $10 influenza vaccines (flu shots) for a limited time beginning October 4. No appointment is necessary. Medicare Part B will be accepted provided the insured brings his medicare card.

The vaccines will be given at the Human Services Building, second floor Demonstration Kitchen, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive, on October 4, 11, and 18, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information call 672-4955.

The vaccines will also be given at the Glen Echo Building (rear entrance), 3810 Nine Mile Road, on October 4, 11, 18 and 25, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information call 652-3190.

Also, October 25 only, the vaccine will be given at the Koger Center, Campbell Building, Room 303, 8002 Discovery Drive, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. For more information call 672-4955.

Flu shots are recommended for people who are at risk for contracting the virus, including those more than 65 years of age, health care workers, people with high risk medical conditions (i.e., heart or lung problems, kidney disease, diabetes, asthma, cancer or AIDS) and people who provide essential community services. Residents who want to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza should consult with their doctor before getting the shot.

The pneumonia vaccine will also be available at the locations listed above for a $17 fee.

Henrico's Assistant Director of General Services Curtis L. Walsh, CPPO, received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (NGIP) at its 51st annual exposition in Austin, Texas. This national award, established in 1950, recognizes excellence in public purchasing.

Walsh represented Henrico County on the NGIP Board of Directors from 1981 through 1995, serving as president in 1989. He has continued to be active in the public purchasing arena, serving on various councils, and instructing seminars. He received his Certified Public Purchasing Officer (CPPO) designation in 1979.

The NGIP is a non-profit organization composed of 60 chapters in more than 1,800 federal, state and local government agencies throughout the United States and Canada.

The counties of Henrico, Goochland and New Kent proudly announce the grand opening of Henrico Regional Jail East in New Kent County. Public tours of this new facility will be held Tuesday, September 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. Contact the Henrico County Sheriff's Office at (804) 652-1111 for additional information.

The Henrico Regional Jail East is located off Route 30 in New Kent County--approximately 40 miles east of Richmond, 25 miles northwest of Williamsburg, and 30 miles west of Newport News. From Richmond, take I-64 east to exit 220 (Route 33 east). Continue east on Route 33 to the first stop light. Turn right at the stop light on Route 30 east. The regional jail will be on the left.

From Norfolk, take I-64 west to exit 220 (Route 33 east). Continue east on Route 33 to the first stop light. Turn right at the stop light on Route 30 east. The regional jail will be on the left.

The Henrico Regional Jail East represents a significant regional partnership between Henrico, Goochland and New Kent counties. It is the first campus-style jail in Virginia and east of the Mississippi River. Situated on a 76-acre tract of land, the 256,300-square-foot facility will provide custody for both males and females. The jail has a 528-bed capacity.

The public tours on September 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. are being held to give residents throughout the region an opportunity to learn about correctional facilities and to see first-hand the very latest in jail technology, design, and management.

Henrico Board Vice Chairman and Varina District Supervisor James B. Donati, Jr. will host a special informational meeting on the White Oak Semiconductor project on Monday, September 16, at the Glen Echo Building Auditorium, 3810 Nine Mile Road. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., residents are invited to visit the open house and view exhibits for the proposed project and the plans for future roads and utilities. Beginning at 7 p.m., Henrico County staff will make a formal presentation which will be followed by an open question and answer session.

"Because of the impact that the project will have on the county, we want to give people the information they need - whether it's background on the Elko Tract, or the effect of the plant on eastern Henrico - we will be able to answer their questions at this meeting," Donati said.

Representatives from Henrico County's departments of planning, public works, public utilities, economic development and the county manager's staff will be at the meeting to field questions from the attendees.

As with all of Donati's town meetings, the public is invited to attend.

The County of Henrico Department of Social Services is offering a six-week class for people interested in becoming foster parents. The first class will be held on Tuesday, October 1, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive. Foster parents for teenagers are especially needed, and those interested in helping are strongly encouraged to attend.
