The County of Henrico Planning Office has scheduled a public meeting to allow property owners and citizens to discuss issues and possible changes relating to the Creighton Road Corridor Small Area Land Use Study.
This public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Arthur Ashe Jr. Elementary School located at 1001 Cedar Fork Road. A number of issues were raised about this study at a recent Board of Supervisors' public hearing. This meeting will give citizens the opportunity to discuss these issues and any other matters relating to the study.

The Henrico County "Language Bank" needs bilingual and multilingual volunteers. Individuals will be on-call to assist the Henrico County Government staff in communicating with residents and customers who do not speak English.
Twenty-one languages are currently represented in the Language Bank with more translators needed for the various dialects of the Hispanic and Asian languages.
Volunteers proficient in sign language are also needed.

The County of Henrico Department of Social Services is offering a six-week class for people interested in becoming foster parents. The first class will be held on Wednesday, April 16, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive. Foster parents for teenagers are especially needed, and those interested in helping are strongly encouraged to attend.

"County Services for Senior Citizens" will be the topic of Fairfield District Supervisor Frank Thornton's constituent meeting on Thursday, April 10, at 11:30 a.m., at St. Peter Baptist Church, 2040 Mountain Road in Glen Allen.
"Many of our County residents are seniors, and we have programs and services specifically targeted for their recreational, educational and other needs," Thornton said. "This meeting will address those programs, and give Henrico's seniors the opportunity to become involved and acquire the information they want," he said.
In effort to reach as many County residents as possible, Thornton asks that those people planning to attend the meeting invite three others to join them.

He will discuss the County's Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, what they are, and how they help our residents.
"Resources like the CDBG funds offer great opportunities for the Board of Supervisors and County staff to make a positive difference in the development of Henrico, as well as in the lives of our residents. I want to give my constituents the opportunity to asks questions in an open forum with their peers, and discover what these funds, under our direction, are really doing for them," Thornton said.

Eighteen individuals and two youth groups will be recognized for outstanding community service at the first Henrico Outstanding Youth Awards ceremony on Tuesday, March 25, at 7 p.m., at the Jepson School for Leadership, University of Richmond. The awards program is sponsored by the Henrico Youth Leadership Development Committee, a public-private partnership developed to promote healthy living for youth.
To be eligible for the award, the child must be between 12 and 18 years old, reside in Henrico County, and must have demonstrated "selfless volunteer contributions without monetary gain to an individual, their family, an agency or their community," according to the nomination form guidelines. The committee received more than 70 nominations for the awards.
Ten of the twenty award winners on Tuesday night will receive a second, regional award at a ceremony on April 15, at the Richmond Science Museum.
The County of Henrico's Internet home page realized a 584 percent increase in February traffic over the same month last year; the County web sites collectively received 57,149 hits last month, compared to 9,771 in February, 1996. The two most popular sites being visited are the County's public schools' web pages, and the online job listings posted by the personnel department.
Human Resource Information Systems Manager Jane Klosky said, "Last year, 331 people applied for positions from our web site information. Four individuals were hired."
Henrico County's home page address is "www.co.henrico.va.us." Citizens are able to request information from many of the County's agencies by first visiting this site.
The County's web pages are created and maintained with guidance from the Henrico Internet Project (HIP) team, a group comprised of departmental representatives within the County government.
The County of Henrico Department of Public Works advises motorists that on Friday, March 14, the one-lane bridge on Charles City Road between Gill Dale Road and Hines Road will be posted with a three-ton weight limit.
The restriction is necessary due to structural damage caused by an accident on the bridge. The weight restriction will increase to 15 tons in approximately four weeks, after interim repairs are completed. County officials are currently discussing plans to permanently replace the bridge.
Detours for large trucks and school buses will be posted.
The County of Henrico Department of Public Works advises motorists that on Sunday, March 16, West Broad Street between Horsepen Road and Willow Lawn Drive will be closed to eastbound traffic from 1 to 5 p.m. for the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
Horsepen Road between Dartmouth Road and West Broad Street will also be closed.
Motorists should expect heavy traffic and detours in the area.
Henrico residents are invited to tour the newly renovated and open-for-business Confederate Hills Recreation Center with guide, Board Chairman and Varina Supervisor Jim Donati. He will hold his next town meeting at Confederate Hills Recreation Center, 302 Lee Avenue, on Monday, March 17, at 7 p.m.
"The recreation center officially opened on February 18, and is the third County owned establishment of its kind," Donati said. "Confederate Hills, Belmont and Dorey recreation centers are all available for private rental, and they each conduct a large variety of programs and classes -- from aerobics, to crafts and special courses targeted to both seniors and preschoolers. I am inviting all of our residents to come out and visit our most recent facility, and see for themselves all it has to offer," he said.
Staff representatives from the Division of Recreation and Parks will be on site to give more detailed information about the programs offered at Confederate Hills, as well as assist Donati with conducting tours of the facility.
Varina town meetings are held the third Monday of each month and are open to the public.
President of the Virginia State Bar (VSB) Robert B. Altizer, from Tazewell, Virginia, will be the guest speaker at the Henrico County Bar Association luncheon meeting on Friday, March 21, at 12 noon, at the Westwood Racquet Club, 6200 West Club Lane.
The VSB candidates for president-elect, John A.C. Keith of Fairfax and Bernard J. DiMuro of Alexandria, will also be introduced at the meeting.

The Keep Henrico Beautiful Committee, Henrico County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension, and Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden will conduct a spring composting workshop on Saturday, March 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Avenue. Registration is free, but is required and limited. The Botanical Garden will waive the entrance fee for pre-registered participants, who may tour the grounds after the workshop.
