DATE: October 27, 1999 The National Association of Counties (NACo) has appointed 10 Henrico County officials to serve on the association's policy steering committees. Each NACo appointment is a one-year term. Henrico County Board Chairman and Tuckahoe District Supervisor Patricia S. O'Bannon will serve on the Transportation and Telecommunications Committee; Vice Chairman and Fairfield District Supervisor Frank J. Thornton will serve on the Human Services and Education Committee; Brookland District Supervisor Richard W. Glover and Three Chopt District Supervisor David A. Kaechele will serve on the Taxation and Finance Committee; and Varina District Supervisor James B. Donati, Jr. will serve on the Community and Economic Development Committee. Henrico County Manager Virgil R. Hazelett, P.E. will serve on the Justice and Public Safety Committee; Deputy County Manager George T. Drumwright, Jr. will serve on the Health Committee; Deputy County Manager Harvey L. Hinson will serve on the Environment, Energy, and Land Use Committee; Deputy County Manager Robert K. Pinkerton will serve on the Public Lands Committee; and Director of the Capital Area Training Consortium (CATC) Rosalyn D. Key will serve on the Employment Committee and serve as Vice Chair of the Dislocated Workers Subcommittee. NACo is the only national organization representing county governments in the United States. Its goals are to improve county government, act as a liaison with other levels of government, serve as the national voice for counties, and to advance public understanding. NACo's 10 steering committees form the policy-making arm of the association. Each committee is comprised of approximately 50-60 county officials who meet several times a year to examine issues critical to local government, and make recommendations on legislative policies and goals before Congress and the White House. DATE: October 19, 1999 The Henrico County General Registrar's Office is hosting an intern from Pretoria, South Africa, from October 13, through November 5. The International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES) is sponsoring Edward Nkhangweleni Lambani, a participant in its Hatfield-Dixon Internship Program. IFES is a private, nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that seeks to bring executives from emerging democracies to the United States for intensive professional development in elections and voting processes. Lambani will be meeting with Henrico County officials, the State Board of Elections and local media, while observing all facets of the elections process. Henrico will hold local elections on Tuesday, November 2. Lambani serves as the Chief Director of Legal Services for the Independent Electoral Commission in Pretoria, and is the former Chief Executive Officer for Randfontein Transitional Local Council. Furthermore, Lambani spent ten years in the legal profession and has earned several law degrees. "We are very honored to have such a distinguished guest and welcome him to Henrico County. We will work hard to help him gain valuable information to take back to his country," said Henrico's General Registrar Janet C. Coon. DATE: October 15, 1999 Henrico County's Department of Public Works advises motorists to expect delays on Friday, October 29, beginning at 6:30 p.m., around Highland Springs High School due to the school's homecoming parade. The parade will form at South Cedar Avenue between Nine Mile Road and Jerald Street, travel eastbound on Nine Mile Road, turn right on Oak Avenue and into Highland Springs High School. Eastbound traffic on Nine Mile Road will be detoured using Beech Avenue, Vine Street and Quince Avenue. The parade will not affect westbound traffic on Nine Mile Road; however, motorists in the vicinity should expect delays. DATE: October 12, 1999 The Henrico County Division of Police will hold a rabies clinic on Saturday, October 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Public Safety Building, 7721 E. Parham Road. All dogs and cats ages 4 months and older are required to have a rabies shot. Shots cost $6 each and come with a certificate of inoculation and a rabies tag. Dog owners may also purchase a license for $10 at the clinic but must show proof of rabies inoculation. DATE: October 7, 1999 "Transforming Henrico's Public Libraries - How Will Their New Technology Serve You in the Next Millennium?" is the topic of Board Chairman and Tuckahoe District Supervisor Pat O'Bannon's next town meeting on Wednesday, October 20, at 7 p.m., at the Gayton Public Library, 10600 Gayton Road. Representatives from Henrico Libraries will join O'Bannon in leading the program and answering questions. O'Bannon encourages anyone interested in learning more about Henrico's public libraries to attend. "Libraries play a significant role in many of Henrico's communities, therefore it is important to know the scope of services and information they will provide in the future," said O'Bannon. DATE: October 6, 1999 Henrico's Varina District Supervisor Jim Donati will host a town meeting to address "Community Policing in the Varina District" on Monday, October 18, at 7 p.m., at the Eastern Government Center, 3820 Nine Mile Road. Henrico Police Chief Henry W. Stanley, Jr. and other members of the Division of Police will discuss community policing and safety issues within the Varina District. "This discussion is an opportunity for citizens to gather suggestions on how to make their neighborhoods, their homes and themselves safer," said Donati. Donati generally holds town meetings the third Monday of each month. The meetings are open to the public. DATE: October 5, 1999 Henrico County's Health Department will offer special flu clinics on Friday, October 8, and Friday, October 15. Flu shots will be administered from 8:30 until 11:30 a.m. at the West Clinic, located in the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive. Flu shots will also be given during regular walk-in hours at the West Clinic on Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m., and on Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. For more information on the West Clinic call 501-4955. The East Clinic, located at 3810 Nine Mile Road, will provide vaccinations on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Contact the East Clinic at 652-3167 for additional information. Flu vaccines will cost $7 and pneumonia vaccines will be $14. Clinics will provide Medicare billing for both; recipients must show their Medicare Part-B card. Citizens should consult their health care provider to determine if either vaccine is appropriate. DATE: October 1, 1999 Henrico County Department of Public Works advises motorists that on Saturday, October 9, between 6:45 and 10 p.m., the eastbound lane of West Broad Street between Willow Lawn and DMV Drives will be closed due to the Autumn Harvest Parade. The parade will also travel along Staples Mill Road between West Broad Street and Augusta Avenue before disbanding at The Shops at Willow Lawn. Motorists should expect heavy traffic delays, and are advised to use Monument Avenue as an alternate route. |
