DATE: September 29, 1999 Vice Chairman and Fairfield District Supervisor Frank Thornton will discuss the new North Park Library and the on-line library catalogue system at his next constituent meeting on Monday, October 11, at 7 p.m., at the Fairfield Library, 1001 N. Laburnum Avenue. Deputy Director of Facilities Management Bill Smith and Capital Projects Coordinator Don Meeker will make a presentation on the new library. Director of Libraries Gerald McKenna will follow with a brief demonstration of the new on-line library catalogue system. Groundbreaking for the new library should begin early next year and will replace the current 1985 structure. The new building will serve patrons of all ages, offer a wide range of materials and provide programs for children. "The community is very supportive of the existing library; I know the new library, when completed, will be a welcome addition to the area," Thornton said. DATE: September 28, 1999 Rosalyn D. Key, Director of the Capital Area Training Consortium (CATC), has been appointed to a national steering committee. National Association of Counties (NACo) President C. Vernon Gray named Key vice chair of the Youth Employment Subcommittee of NACo's Labor and Employment Steering Committee. The subcommittee is comprised of approximately 50-60 county officials who meet several times throughout the year to examine issues critical to local government and make recommendations on legislative policies and goals. Key, a 14-year veteran with the County of Henrico, manages CATC's workforce development program under the Job Training Partnership Act for a seven county consortium in the metro Richmond region. Her NACo appointment is for a one-year term. DATE: September 24, 1999 The Henrico Extension Office is now accepting applications for the 2000 Henrico Master Gardener program. Master Gardeners act as volunteer educators within the community providing information on lawns, trees, shrubs, vegetables and pest management practices. The Master Gardeners receive environmental horticulture training through Virginia Cooperative Extension. Training classes will meet every Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Classes begin January 26 and run through March 31, 2000. A $90 fee will be collected at the first session to cover the cost of training materials. Program applications will be accepted until December 1, 1999. Call 501-5160 for more information or to request an application package. DATE: September 20, 1999 The Henrico County Extension Office is sponsoring the annual 4-H apple, peanut, and honey sale. York and Stayman Apples - both suitable for eating and cooking - are $8.50 per half bushel. Raw peanuts are $5 per two pound with recipes included. Two pounds of deluxe cocktail peanuts, salted or unsalted, are $8. One-pound jars of medium, or dark honey are $3 each. Funds generated from the sale help support local 4-H programs. Order forms are available at the county's Extension office in the Henrico Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive, or any Henrico County library. The produce is expected to go fast and the office suggests all orders be placed by October 4; after that date, orders will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis. Distribution will be Wednesday, October 20, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Henrico Eastern Government Center; and on Thursday, October 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the county's Extension Office. DATE: September 17, 1999 The Department of Public Works will collect trees and tree limbs (maximum length: 6 feet) that have fallen on private property as a result of Hurricane Floyd. Residents who wish to take advantage of this free public service must bring all debris to the edge of a roadway. Debris collection will begin as soon as possible and will end on October 18. Once they have brought the storm debris to the road's edge, residents can call 501-4393 during normal business hours to schedule a pick-up day. After October 18, residents must pay a $40 bulky waste fee to have the Department of Public Utilities collect the storm debris. In addition, after this date, all trees and limbs may not exceed a 4-foot length or a 4-inch diameter. DATE: September 17, 1999 In observance of Fire Prevention Week, October 3 through 9, Henrico County's Division of Fire will host several Fire Prevention Fairs at the following locations, dates and times: --Sunday, October 3, from 1 to 5 p.m., at the Big Kmart, 1508 N. Parham Road; The family-oriented fairs will feature fire prevention and educational materials for all ages. Sparky the Fire Dog and Smokey the Bear will be there, as will Henrico's hazardous materials, water rescue, and heavy tactical rescue teams. Antique fire trucks and ambulances will be on display, and children can practice home escape methods in the fire safety trailer. Firefighters will also perform a "fire safety skit." DATE: September 10, 1999 "Promoting Healthy Families in Our Communities - Henrico's Positive Approach to Domestic Issues" is the topic of Board Chairman and Tuckahoe District Supervisor Pat O'Bannon's next town meeting on Wednesday, September 22, at 7 p.m., at Maybeury Elementary School, 901 Maybeury Drive. Deputy County Manager for Community Services George T. Drumwright will join O'Bannon in leading the program, which will feature physical, emotional and mental health within families. County staff members from the Division of Police and the Department of Mental Health/Mental Retardation will also guide discussions. "The health and strength of our families is paramount to the health of our communities," O'Bannon said. "At this meeting we will address domestic issues in a positive way, as well as discuss the particulars of maintaining safety, happiness and healthiness for ourselves and our loved ones," she said. DATE: September 2, 1999 Henrico's Varina District Supervisor Jim Donati will host a special town meeting on Monday, September 13 at 7 p.m. at the Eastern Government Center, 3820 Nine Mile Road. Henrico School Superintendent Dr. Mark A. Edwards will speak on "Student Performance" and discuss the Standards of Learning. "Student performance is vital to the long-range economic development of this area as we prepare our young people for jobs in business and industry," Donati said. He added, "After so much controversy surrounding the SOLs, I'm looking forward to Dr. Edwards' report on how they are affecting our children's education." Donati generally holds town meetings the third Monday of each month. The meetings are open to the public. |
