DATE: March 30, 2000 Henrico County's Community Maintenance Program is launching Operation Paintbrush on Saturday, April 1. Beginning at 8 a.m., approximately 15 volunteers from Lakeside Presbyterian Church will "adopt" the house at 2301 Parkside Avenue for exterior painting. An additional 30 volunteers from Hermitage High School's ROTC will clean up the surrounding neighborhood. The Community Maintenance team developed Operation Paintbrush to recruit volunteers and pair them with area homeowners who are unable to care for their property or have limited income. The free paint program is one of Henrico's many community partnerships designed to preserve and enhance its neighborhoods. Operation Paintbrush plans to assist at least 14 homes throughout the county by June. DATE: March 28, 2000 Henrico County's Community Maintenance Program is a winner of the first ever Acts of Caring award, given by the National Association of Counties (NACo). NACo defines an "act of caring" as a service provided by a volunteer or volunteer group working with county government that seeks to preserve and enhance the quality of life within their community. By providing volunteer assistance and ongoing communication and education within individual communities, Henrico's Community Maintenance team promotes a healthier and safer environment through voluntary compliance of county ordinances. NACo will present the inaugural award to Henrico officials at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, April 13. The ceremony is part of NACo's National County Government Week festivities, whose theme this year is "Honoring Volunteers." An independent panel of judges from leading national volunteer organizations selected the winners in this competitive awards program. "Henrico is honored to win this prestigious award," said Henrico's Community Maintenance Manager Paul Johnson. "Our volunteers deserve much of the credit; they work very hard," he said. NACo is the only national organization representing county governments in the United States. Its goals are to improve county government, act as a liaison with other levels of government, serve as the national voice for counties, and to advance public understanding. DATE: March 27, 2000 Board Chairman and Fairfield District Supervisor Frank Thornton will discuss "The Importance of the 2000 Census" at his next constituent meeting on Monday, April 10, at 7 p.m., at the Henrico Training Facility, Room 2031, 7721 E. Parham Road. The meeting will feature several guest speakers including Larry Gray from the Richmond Census Office, as well as representatives from Henrico County's Planning Office. Thornton encourages anyone with questions about the current census or is interested in the topic to attend. Thornton's meetings are open to the public. DATE: March 24, 2000 Henrico County's Department of Public Works advises motorists that the inside northbound and southbound through lanes on Parham Road at Interstate 64 will close beginning Monday, March 27, at 10 p.m. Construction on Parham Road will be limited to Monday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The lanes will be open all other times of the day. The purpose of the closure is to lengthen the northbound left turn lane on Parham Road at the westbound entrance ramp to Interstate 64. Public Works estimates the project will take approximately two months. DATE: March 23, 2000 The Henrico County Department of Social Services is hosting a free, eight-week class for people interested in becoming a foster parent for a child or teenager. Social Services will hold classes on Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive. Classes begin April 25. DATE: March 22, 2000 Henrico County general government and school administrations will host the 43rd annual Student Government Day on Thursday, March 30. Approximately 100 students from the county's eight high schools will observe and function as Henrico administration officials. "This event has been extremely successful because it gives students a designated role within Henrico's government structure for a day," said Public Information Director Coral Gills. "By pairing students with a counterpart, they learn first hand how their local government operates," she said. Students will assume the roles of Henrico's board of supervisors and the school board, as well as the county manager and school superintendent, the chiefs of police and fire, constitutional officers and department heads for the day. The students will conclude their day by holding a mock board of supervisors' meeting at 2 p.m., in the Board Room of the Administration Building, Parham and Hungary Spring roads. The Kiwanis Clubs of North Richmond, Tuckahoe and West Henrico sponsor Student Government Day. DATE: March 13, 2000 Tuckahoe District Supervisor Pat O'Bannon will address "Residential Power Outages and Electric Utility Deregulation" in a special community forum on Thursday, March 30, at 7 p.m., Maybeury Elementary School Multipurpose Room, 901 Maybeury Drive. Representatives from Henrico County government, Virginia Power and the State Corporation Commission will join O'Bannon to discuss the issues and answer questions. "Area residents are concerned about their electrical service and are uneasy about the impact of deregulation," said O'Bannon. DATE: March 7, 2000 Henrico County Department of Public Works advises motorists that on Sunday, March 19, West Broad Street between Horsepen Road and Willow Lawn Drive will be closed to eastbound traffic from 1:30 to 5 p.m., for the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Horsepen Road between Dartmouth Avenue and West Broad Street will also be closed. Motorists should expect heavy traffic and detours in the area. DATE: March 6, 2000 Board Chairman and Fairfield District Supervisor Frank Thornton will discuss "The Function of Boards and Commissions-How They Work For You" at his next constituent meeting on Monday, March 13, at 7 p.m., at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Road. The meeting will also include a tour of The Cultural Arts Center. The state-of-the-art facility opened nearly a year ago and is the area's first comprehensive community center for the performing, visual and literary arts. Thornton encourages anyone interested in the function of Henrico Boards and Commissions, or seeing The Cultural Arts Center, to attend. Thornton's meetings are open to the public. DATE: March 6, 2000 Varina District Supervisor Jim Donati will host a town meeting to explain Henrico County Schools' Budget: Who, What and When on Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., at the Eastern Government Center, 3820 Nine Mile Road. Henrico County Assistant Superintendent for Operations Kenneth Crush will discuss the school budget and answer questions. "I encourage anyone interested in learning how Henrico's schools are funded to attend," Donati said. Donati generally holds town meetings the third Monday of each month. The meetings are open to the public. DATE: March 3, 2000 The Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) has appointed eight Henrico County officials to serve on the association's steering and operational committees. Each VACo appointment is for a one-year term. Henrico County Board Chairman and Fairfield District Supervisor Frank J. Thornton will serve on the Resolutions Committee and as Vice Chairman of the Education Steering Committee; Board Vice Chairman and Brookland District Supervisor Richard W. Glover will serve on the Community Development and Planning Steering Committee; Varina District Supervisor James B. Donati, Jr. is the Region 3 representative on VACo's Board of Directors and will serve on the Administration of Government Committee; Three Chopt District Supervisor David A. Kaechele will serve on the Finance Steering Committee; and Tuckahoe District Supervisor Patricia S. O'Bannon will serve on the Telecommunications and Utilities Committee. Deputy County Manager George T. Drumwright, Jr. will serve on the Health and Human Resources Steering Committee; Deputy County Manager Harvey L. Hinson will serve on the Environment and Agriculture Steering Committee; and Deputy County Manager Robert K. Pinkerton will serve on the Transportation Steering Committee. Committee members assist in the analysis of statewide issues as they affect Virginia's governments and coordinate efforts to achieve effectiveness in the legislative and regulatory processes. They also actively develop VACo's policies. DATE: March 2, 2000 Tuckahoe District Supervisor Patricia S. O'Bannon has been named chairman of the Local Government Advisory Committee (LGAC) for the Chesapeake Bay Commission. O'Bannon will serve a one-year term. The LGAC coordinates local government involvement in the Chesapeake Bay Program, serving as advisors to the governors of Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Chesapeake Bay Commission. The Chesapeake Bay Program is a regional partnership that has been directing the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay since 1983. DATE: March 1, 2000 The Henrico County Board of Supervisors will begin its next boardmeeting on Tuesday, March 14, at 6 p.m. rather than the regularlyscheduled 7 p.m. The Board typically meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m., in the Government Center Board Room, located at Parham and Hungary Spring roads. |
