DATE: November 15, 2000 Varina District Supervisor Jim Donati will host a town meeting to highlight "Changing Demographics," on Monday, November 20, at 7 p.m., at the Eastern Government Center, 3820 Nine Mile Road. Beverly Beck from Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging, will join Donati to discuss the services and programs the agency provides. A Henrico County representative will also be present to answer Medicaid questions. Donati usually holds town meetings the third Monday of each month. The meetings are open to the public; everyone is welcome to attend. DATE: November 15, 2000 The National Association of Counties (NACo) has appointed 10 Henrico County officials to serve on the association's policy steering committees. Each appointment is a one-year term. Members of Henrico's Board of Supervisors will serve on the following steering committees: Board Chairman and Fairfield District Supervisor Frank J. Thornton, Human Services and Education; Brookland District Supervisor Richard W. Glover and Three Chopt District Supervisor David A. Kaechele, Taxation and Finance; Tuckahoe District Supervisor Patricia S. O'Bannon, vice chair of Telecommunications and Technology; and Varina District Supervisor James B. Donati, Jr., Community and Economic Development. Henrico County Manager Virgil R. Hazelett, P.E. will serve on the Justice and Public Safety Committee; Deputy County Manager George T. Drumwright, Jr. will serve on the Health Committee; Deputy County Manager Harvey L. Hinson will serve on the Environment, Energy, and Land Use Committee; Deputy County Manager Robert K. Pinkerton will serve on the Public Lands Committee; and Director of the Capital Area Training Consortium (CATC) Rosalyn D. Key will serve on the Labor and Employee Benefits Committee. NACo is the only national organization representing county governments in the United States. Its goals are to improve county government, act as a liaison with other levels of government, serve as the national voice for counties, and to increase public understanding on the role of counties. NACo's 11 steering committees form the policy-making arm of the association. Each committee is comprised of approximately 60-100 county officials who meet several times a year to examine issues critical to local government, and make recommendations on legislative policies and goals before Congress and the White House. DATE: November 8, 2000 The Rotary Club of Innsbrook has presented the 2000 Business Leadership Award to Henrico County Manager Virgil R. Hazelett, P.E. The award recognizes outstanding leadership in business, a commitment to high ethical standards and dedicated service to the community. The Rotary Club will also make a $500 contribution to a charity designated by Hazelett. A committee selected Hazelett from a list of nine area business leaders. "I am extremely honored to receive this award, The Rotary Club of Innsbrook is an exemplary organization," Hazelett said. Hazelett began his career with Henrico County in 1972 as a traffic engineer and has served as the County Manager since 1992. He earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from the West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1967, as well as a master's degree from West Virginia University in 1968, under an Eno Traffic Foundation Fellowship. DATE: November 7, 2000 Governor Jim Gilmore has appointed Henrico's Chief of Police Colonel Henry W. Stanley, Jr. to the Wireless E-911 Services Board for a five-year term. Created as a result of a 2000 General Assembly bill, the board will fund the development of enhanced wireless emergency 911 services for localities, provide technical advisory assistance, and weigh the impact of legislation. As a board member, Stanley will report annually to the Governor, the Senate Committee on Finance, the House Committee on Appropriations, and the Virginia State Crime Commission. Stanley began his career with Henrico County's Division of Police as a patrolman in 1962 and has served as the Chief of Police since August 1, 1995. He earned a bachelor's degree in police administration from Virginia Commonwealth University and an associate degree in criminal justice and public safety. Stanley is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the Senior Management Institute - Police Executive Research Forum, and the University of Richmond Jepson School of Leadership - Police Executive Leadership School. DATE: November 7, 2000 On Saturday, November 18, between 8 and 11 a.m., Huguenot Road northbound, including the northbound lane of the Huguenot Bridge, will close between Chippenham Parkway and Three Chopt Road for the Richmond Marathon. Northbound traffic will be diverted from the Huguenot Bridge to the Edward Willey Bridge. The marathon will not affect southbound motorists. Temporary road closures or delays may occur during the marathon on other bridge crossings and roadways within the City of Richmond. DATE: November 3, 2000 Beginning November 13, visitors to Henrico County's Eastern Government Center at 3820 Nine Mile Road will encounter detours in the immediate area due to construction. Entrances to the Glen Echo and Government Center buildings are relocating to the intersection at Evergreen and Nine Mile roads. There will be modifications to traffic patterns on Nine Mile Road until a new entrance is constructed. Visitors should enter the Eastern Government Center complex from Dabbs House and Nine Mile roads and watch for detour signs throughout the area. Construction should conclude by year-end. |
