The Henrico County Health Department is offering flu vaccinations for $11; no appointment necessary. Flu shots will be administered from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, December 7, at the West Clinic in the Human Services Building, 8600 Dixon Powers Drive. The East Clinic, at 3810 Nine Mile Road, will provide vaccinations during regular walk-in hours every Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Clinics will accept Medicare Part B with the card, but cannot bill Medicare HMOs or Medicaid.

Health officials recommend flu protection for people ages 65 and older; those with chronic pulmonary or cardiovascular disease, including asthma; people with chronic metabolic disease, kidney dysfunction, blood disorders or immune system problems, as well as residents and staff of nursing homes and other chronic-care facilities.

Varina District Supervisor Jim Donati will highlight emergency preparedness at his next town meeting on Monday, November 19, at 7 p.m., at the Eastern Government Center, 3820 Nine Mile Road. Representatives from Henrico's Fire and Police Divisions as well as the Health Department will join Donati to provide expert knowledge on how to prepare for a crisis and answer questions.

Donati typically holds town meetings the third Monday of each month. His meetings are open to the public, and he encourages everyone to attend.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) has appointed 12 Henrico officials to the association's policy steering committees and to the recently created Homeland Security Task Force.

Members of Henrico's Board of Supervisors will serve on the following steering committees: Board Chairman and Brookland District Supervisor Richard W. Glover, Transportation; Vice Chairman and Varina District Supervisor James B. Donati, Jr., Community and Economic Development; Fairfield District Supervisor Frank J. Thornton, Human Services and Education; Three Chopt District Supervisor David A. Kaechele, Finance and Intergovernmental Affairs; and Tuckahoe District Supervisor Patricia S. O'Bannon, Telecommunications and Technology. The following county officials will also serve on NACo steering committees: Henrico County Manager Virgil R. Hazelett, P.E., Justice and Public Safety; Deputy County Manager George T. Drumwright, Jr., Health; Deputy County Manager Harvey L. Hinson, Environment, Energy and Land Use; Deputy County Manager Robert K. Pinkerton, Public Lands; and Capital Area Training Consortium Director Rosalyn D. Key, Labor and Employee Benefits. -MORE- NACo President Javier Gonzales has appointed Henrico Deputy County Manager Angela N. Harper and Legislative Liaison Linda G. Robinson to the new Task Force on Homeland Security.

The 40-member task force will work to secure the nation's communities and serve as a direct link between counties and federal agencies. Approximately 60-100 county officials comprise each of NACo's 11 steering committees to form its policy-making arm. Committees meet several times a year to examine issues critical to local government, and make recommendations on legislative policies and goals before Congress and the White House.

NACo is the only national organization representing county governments in the United States. Its goals are to improve county government, act as a liaison with other levels of government, serve as the national voice for counties, and to advance public understanding of the role of counties.

On Saturday, November 10, between 8 and 11 a.m., Huguenot Road northbound, including the northbound lane of the Huguenot Bridge, will close between Chippenham Parkway and Three Chopt Road for the Richmond Marathon. A detour will divert northbound traffic from the Huguenot Bridge to the Edward Willey Bridge. The marathon will not affect southbound motorists. Temporary road closures or delays may occur during the marathon on other bridge crossings and roadways within the City of Richmond.
