The international Water Environment Federation (WEF) has named Henrico County Water Reclamation Facility Manager Mark W. Prentice the recipient of its prestigious Arthur Sidney Bedell Award. The WEF announced the award last week.

The Henrico County Board of Supervisors honored Prentice, a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves currently serving in Iraq, at its regular meeting Tuesday.

Prentice received the Bedell Award for his 20 years of exemplary service to the Virginia Water Environment Association, the state chapter of the WEF. An educational organization working to preserve the global water environment, the WEF is comprised of water-quality professionals from more than 32 nations.

Also at the meeting, Board Chairman Patricia S. O'Bannon accepted a special gift on behalf of Henrico County from Prentice--a U.S. flag that accompanied him on a recent flight into Baghdad. On March 12, the Henrico employee and his crew piloted their C-130H transport aircraft on a combat mission into Baghdad; the flag presented to the county was on board during the flight.

The manager since 1994, Prentice oversees the operation and maintenance of the 60 million-gallon per day water reclamation facility. He also is responsible for the county's laboratory operations and industrial waste monitoring program.

Prentice has been on leave from his Henrico job since early March, when his 758th Airlift Squadron was activated for duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

" Henrico County is extremely proud to receive this flag and to have an employee the caliber of Mark Prentice as part of our staff," Hazelett said. " Not only is Mark an outstanding professional, but he is also a dedicated citizen, answering the call to serve his country. We honor him for his good work, thank him for his service and wish him a safe and speedy return."
