The Henrico County Department of Public Works advises motorists that on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 8 to 11 a.m., the northbound lane of Huguenot Road - including the Huguenot Bridge - will close between Chippenham Parkway and Three Chopt Road for the Richmond Marathon.

A detour will divert northbound traffic from the Huguenot Bridge to the Edward Willey Bridge. The marathon will not affect southbound motorists but may cause temporary road closures or delays on other bridge crossings and roadways within the City of Richmond.

The next constituent meeting of Henrico County Board Chairman and Fairfield District Supervisor Frank Thornton will feature information and a discussion about the new Medicare prescription drug plan as well as a demonstration of Henrico's new touch-screen voting equipment. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at North Park Library, 8505 Franconia Road.

Representatives from the Social Security Administration, Senior Connections and Henrico's Department of Social Services are scheduled to speak about the drug plan. They will join Thornton for a question-and-answer period as well.

In addition, meeting participants will be able to try Henrico's new WINvote touch-screen voting machine, which will be used for the first time in the upcoming general election. Representatives from the Voter Registration and Elections Office will be on hand to demonstrate the new voting technology and answer questions.

The next town meeting of Varina District Supervisor Jim Donati will examine Henrico County's emergency preparedness plans. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in the Eastern Government Center multipurpose room, 3820 Nine Mile Road.

"Emergency Preparedness: How Ready are You? How Ready is Henrico County?" will feature presentations by representatives from Henrico's Division of Fire. They will join Donati for a discussion and question-and-answer period as well.

The meeting also will include a report from Henrico Police on the agency's participation in recovery efforts in hurricane-damaged Mississippi.

The Henrico County Division of Police will hold a rabies clinic on Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at gate four of Richmond International Raceway.

Shots cost $6, cash only, and include a rabies tag and certificate of inoculation. Dog owners may purchase a 2006 license with proof of rabies inoculation.

Cats and dogs ages 4 months and older are required to be vaccinated for rabies. Contact Animal Protection at 652-3360 for more information.

The Employer Advisory Council of Henrico Area Mental Health and Retardation Services (MH/MR) will hold its first awards dinner to recognize area businesses and employers that have made outstanding contributions to the agency's clients with mental disabilities. The
dinner is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Road.

Marketing Specialist Gordon Martin said the businesses have worked closely with the county to employ more than 200 clients of MH/MR. They have also helped eliminate some common misperceptions about the abilities of the agency's clients, he said.

"We sometimes run into barriers in employing our clients," Martin said. "But these businesses have recognized their skills and desire to work and have provided opportunities that enrich our clients' lives each day. They've also helped us break down barriers in the community."

More than 20 businesses and employers will be honored at the awards dinner, including: Virginia Crossings Resort; Spring Hill Suites; Owens & Minor; J.
