The Henrico County Blood Program (HCBP) has received a national award for its "outstanding commitment" to blood-donation efforts during 2005.
America's Blood Centers, the nation's largest network of community-based blood programs, has recognized HCBP with the Platinum Blood Drive Award -- its highest honor -- in the employer/medium category. The organization will present the award March 6 at its national meeting in Houston. Virginia Blood Services, a member of America's Blood Centers, nominated the Henrico program for the award.
"Community service is a top priority for Henrico County, and our blood program plays a leading role in that effort," said County Manager Virgil R. Hazelett, P.E. "This award is a tribute to the employees who volunteer their time and talents to make the program such a success."
America's Blood Centers cited HCBP for its long-term, comprehensive commitment to blood donation efforts; strong organizational leadership and involvement; innovative recruitment techniques; frequency of drives; improvement over time; and adoption of new technologies. The program held approximately 50 blood drives at 10 different county locations in 2005, collecting a total of 1,225 pints. From 2001 to 2003, the program increased donations by more than 90 percent.
HCBP, which has operated in its current form since 1992, is spearheaded by a committee of county employees who volunteer additional time for the program. David Ambrogi, who coordinates HCBP activities, said committee members often dig into their own pockets to boost recruitment and blood drive efforts.
"It's a great experience to be a part of such a dedicated group of people," Ambrogi said. "The donation of one pint of blood saves the lives of three people -- what else could you do to have such an impact on our community?"
