The next constituent meeting of Fairfield District Supervisor Frank Thornton will take a closer look at the proposed White Oak Village shopping mall. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, June 12, at the Eastern Government Center multipurpose room, 3820 Nine Mile Road.
Representatives of Forest City Enterprises will provide information about White Oak Village, which is proposed for development on the former Via Systems property on Laburnum Avenue. Henrico County officials also will be on hand and will join Thornton for a question-and-answer period as well.

The Capital Area Workforce Investment Board (CAWIB) Youth Council will hold a series of free job-readiness workshops for young people ages 14-21 in the Richmond metropolitan area and neighboring counties from May 23 to June 8.
Designed to give youth basic competency skills to enter employment, the workshops will prepare participants for conducting a job search. Topics will include maintaining a positive work attitude; being a team player; the value of a resume'; successfully completing job applications; interviewing; and necessary work documents.
Times and locations for the workshops are:
Seating is limited to 50 participants per workshop, so pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Residence in one of the seven counties in the CAWIB service area -- Henrico, Chesterfield, New Kent, Charles City, Powhatan, Goochland and Hanover -- is preferred. Eight programs produced by Henrico County Television (HCTV) Channel 17 have earned top honors at the 39th annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival and the U.S. International Film and Video Festival, two premier awards competitions for independent film and educational programming.
The WorldFest competition -- whose past winners include Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee and George Lucas -- tapped seven HCTV programs for awards, including three Platinum awards, the highest honor given in an individual category:
* "Taking Flight: Stories of Early Virginia Aviation," a feature-length documentary that explores aviation in the state from 1864 to 1940; Platinum, biographical;
* "The Bridges of Henrico County," an up-close look at the current and historical bridges spanning the James River; Platinum, public relations;
* "Under the Lights: Richmond International Raceway," the story of one of the country's most popular auto-racing venues; Platinum, sports;
* "Your Weapon Against Gun Violence: Henrico Exile," an examination of the fight against illegal gun use from the perspective of police officers, convicted felons and witnesses of gun violence; Gold, legal;
* "Until the Cows Come Home: A History of Dairy Farming in Henrico County," a feature-length documentary about local family-owned farms and milk production; Silver, agriculture;
* "Tough Choices: The County Manager Form of Government," the story of Henrico's government and the men who have headed it since 1934; Silver, public affairs; and
* "4-H: Making the Best Better," a look at the Extension Service program and the young people it serves; Bronze.
The U.S. International Film and Video Festival also recognized an HCTV program with a top honor. "Battlefield Henrico: Savage Station 1862," an examination of a significant Civil War battle fought on Henrico soil, received the Gold Camera Award for history/biography.
"Receiving recognition from these competitions is a great honor for HCTV and our staff," said Public Relations & Media Services Director Tamra McKinney. "It reinforces our commitment to provide quality, compelling programming for Henrico residents. "

The Henrico County Division of Police will hold a rabies clinic on Saturday, May 27, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at gate four of Richmond International Raceway.
Shots cost $6, cash only, and include a rabies tag and certificate of inoculation. Dog owners may purchase a 2006 license for $10 with proof of rabies inoculation.
Cats and dogs ages 4 months and older are required to be vaccinated for rabies. Contact Animal Protection at 652-3360 for more information.

Winners of the 10th annual Henrico Outstanding Youth Volunteer Awards were honored recently in a ceremony at the University of Richmond's Jepson School of Leadership Studies for their exemplary contributions to the community. Receiving awards were:
Award winners received a plaque, T-shirt and gift bag donated by local businesses. They also will have the opportunity to apply for a $350 grant to fund their volunteer efforts. Sponsoring the event were the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, the Too Smart to Start Coalition and Henrico Area Mental Health Prevention Services.

The next town meeting of Tuckahoe District Supervisor Patricia S. O'Bannon will offer ideas for families and individuals about developing an emergency response plan. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 16, at the Byrd Middle School library, 9400 Quioccasin Road.
"Disaster Preparedness: Tips for Designing Your Personal Emergency Response Plan" will feature remarks by Capt. Robert Woods, deputy coordinator of emergency services for the Henrico Division of Fire, and Dr. Mark Levine, director of Henrico's Public Health Department. The officials will join O'Bannon for a question-and-answer period as well.
