Arts & Crafts

Watercolor (Beginner)
For ages 50+. This course will introduce the beginner artist to the fundamentals of watercolor painting. Using a floral still-life as the subject, participants will be exposed to techniques in drawing, creating and mixing colors, laying down wet washes, using a “dry brush,” and various other methods. Metal Embossing
For ages 50+. Metal embossing is the art of achieving high and low relief with special laminated metals. Students will learn how to make designs in a metal sheet using different types of embossing tools. Sheets can be made into a variety of objects from small keepsake boxes to hanging ornaments. Screen Printing

Balance Walking
For ages 50+. Don’t just walk, Balance Walk. This program introduces the basics of Nordic Pole Walking with balance-enhancing equipment. Increase your overall body toning and reduce the stresses of normal walking. Balance Walking improves calorie burn, circulation, posture, and oxygen intake while reducing joint stress, foot pain, knee pain, and back pain. Meet at the recreation center. Tai Chi

History

A Tale of Two Stores: Miller & Rhoads and Thalhimers
For ages 50+. Explore the glory days of Richmond’s former department stores with some of the earliest images of both stores. Listen to music from the time period and reminisce about shopping on Broad Street and visiting with Legendary Santa and Snow Bear. Also discuss how the stores expanded through the 20th century. Hop a Trolley to the Park
For ages 50+. Learn about the history of Richmond’s electric streetcar system and the parks at the end of the lines. View images of trolleys from different time periods and the many amusements at Forest Hill Park, Lakeside Park, and Idlewood Park. Annual Senior Golf Tournament
For ages 50+. Men and women are invited to join in the County of Henrico’s Annual Senior Golf Tournament. The four-person team event will use a Captain’s choice format. Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Screening
Come and get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked and learn healthful ways to keep it under control. Cholesterol screening should be taken every six months. Tax-Aide Program
Tax-Aide is a free tax service provided by the IRS and administered by AARP. All volunteer tax preparers are certified by passing an IRS exam. This program is open to all ages and taxpayers are not required to be AARP members. Tax-Aide cannot prepare Sch C, AMT, or Sch E rental returns. Tennis Clubs
For ages 55+. If you enjoy challenging tennis with a large dose of fun, contact the Net Set or the Racketeers. Men and women can join in round-robin style social tennis at an intermediate level of play. Both groups play at Belmont Recreation Center from April through November.

Cheswick Walking Club
It’s fun and easy! Walk your way to improved health and fitness. This club combines fitness and fun for the walker who likes to socialize. Visitors are welcome. This group meets on Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-noon throughout the year at Cheswick Park. On the first Tuesday of each month, a club meeting is held at Deep Run Recreation Center. S.A.L.T./Triad Council (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together)
S.A.L.T./Triad Council is a cooperative effort and working partnership between the County of Henrico Division of Police, County of Henrico Sheriff’s Office, and senior citizens throughout Henrico. Its purpose is to develop, expand, and implement effective crime prevention and education programs for the benefit of our senior citizens and to improve the overall quality of life by making our communities a safer place to live.
S.A.L.T./Triad is a cooperative program sponsored nationally by the American Association of Retired Persons, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the National Sheriff’s Association.
