Winter/Spring 2012

These programs are designed for individuals with disabilities.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements: All programs have minimum eligibility requirements for participation. Minimum eligibility requirements may include, but are not limited to: age, prerequisite skills, safety, endurance, behavioral, personal care, and medical issues. For specific information on a program's minimum eligibility requirements, please contact the staff person listed below each class or program.

Registration Notes:

  • Registration for Winter/Spring programs began January 21.
  • All those attending a program (that requires registration) must be listed on the registration form along with the required assumption of liability signatures.
  • Please register at least one week prior to the start date!

Arts & Crafts

Art on Wheels: Tissue Paper Lanterns for Kids
For ages 7-17. Far more than just decoration, Chinese paper lanterns have signaled births, deaths, social status, and approaching danger through color and shape since 250 B.C. In this fun class, students will use tissue paper to create their very own colorful, hanging paper lantern! Information: Lizz Billings, 501-7489.

Art on Wheels: Needlepoint Coasters
For ages 18+. Needlepoint can be fun for everyone! A plastic needlepoint canvas makes needlepoint a cinch, and a coaster is a fun and creative way to showcase beautiful colors and patterns. Information: Lizz Billings, 501-7489.

Art on Wheels: Handmade Collage Journals
For ages 18+. As early as 1 A.D., ancient Romans first developed the craft of bookbinding through the codex, made from folded and sewn parchment or vellum. Participants will create their very own personal journal, decorated with a variety of collaged materials. These books can be filled with personal stories, poetry, sketches, or photos. May Flowers Craft

Clubs

Ain’t No Stopping Us Now!
For ages 18+. Open to individuals recovering from stroke (CVA) and other physical disabilities who meet minimum eligibility requirements. Join us each season as we celebrate with dining and dancing. Bring a friend and come dance the night away! Information: Lizz Billings, 501-7489.

All Around Town
For ages 21+. Open to individuals recovering from mental illness who meet minimum eligibility requirements. Looking to meet new people and explore your town? Members of this club plan monthly outings in the community and enjoy a variety of recreational and social activities. Information: Lizz Billings, 501-7489.

Morning Mashup
For ages 18+. Open to individuals with intellectual disabilities who meet minimum eligibility requirements. Participants must be independent with ADL’s and able to follow directions. Get out of the daily grind and learn new recreational and leisure skills! Members may be cooking up a storm, crafting like crazy, or being energetically engaged in a variety of activities. Out & About
For ages 21+. Open to individuals with intellectual disabilities who meet minimum eligibility requirements. Looking to spice up your social calendar? This very active social group participates in a variety of recreational and leisure activities in the community. Information: Lizz Billings, 501-7489.

Teens Around Town
For ages 15-21. Open to individuals with developmental disabilities who meet minimum eligibility requirements. Looking for an opportunity to hang out with friends? Join this group for an evening of fun in the community. Information: Kariayn Peach, 501-5135.

T.G.I.F.
For ages 18+. Open to survivors of brain injury who meet minimum eligibility requirements. Henrico Recreation and Parks and Chesterfield Parks and Recreation have teamed up to bring you T.G.I.F. Every first Friday, area survivors of brain injury are invited to join us for the social event of the month. If you enjoy dining, dancing, and recreation with good friends, you will want to be a part of this group. Information: Kariayn Peach, 501-5135.


Dance & Fitness

Club Fit
For ages 18+. Open to individuals with developmental disabilities who meet minimum eligibility requirements. Get in shape while moving to the beat! This class focuses on cardiovascular exercise, muscle conditioning, and stretching. Get your heart pumping and your face smiling. Information: Lizz Billings, 501-7489.

Sportable-Paralympic Sport Richmond: Power Soccer
“Breaking Down Barriers One Sport at a Time!” Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities by enabling them to develop their true potential through recreation, sport, social integration, and community involvement. Athletes must be five years or older and must have a doctor’s clearance to participate.
Sportable and Richmond Kickers partner to provide instruction and competition in the sport of Power Soccer. Power Soccer is the first competitive team sport designed and developed specifically for power wheelchair users. The game is similar to able bodied soccer with a few equipment adaptations. Dance Registration
Dance registration will be open to Henrico County residents EXCLUSIVELY for two weeks (10 business days). After the two-week period, remaining spaces will be available to anyone requesting them. Henrico County residents shall be defined as a person:
-with a mailing address within Henrico County.
-who resides in a group home located in Henrico County.
-who resides in a group home outside Henrico County but can document a home address within Henrico County (parent's or guardian's home only).  

Don't Forget!
-Registration is first-come, first-served.
-Registration is required in advance.
-Payment will not be accepted at the door.
-Each participant's name and address must be provided at the time of registration.
-Each participant (or guardian if applicable) must sign the liability waiver on the registration form.
-Participants must meet minimum eligibility requirements.

Friendship Cafe
Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging, hosts three Friendship Cafes in Henrico County. A hot midday meal, good friends, and diverse activities help seniors, including those with life long disabilities, stay connected to the community. Application required. Unless listed otherwise, programs are taught by Recreation Staff. All fitness, dance, and sports programs are taught by instructors who are nationally certified in their area(s) of expertise.
