Housing Assistance

Each year Henrico County allocates Community Development Block Grant, and HOME Program funds to provide a variety of housing opportunities. The use of these funds supports the County's overall Comprehensive Revitalization Strategy and the related programs are designed to serve a variety of purposes intended to maintain an excellent quality of life.

Maintaining Current Homeowners in Their Homes

Henrico County's strategy seeks to keep current homeowners in their homes. The highest priority is assigned to assisting the elderly and disabled. Under its Moderate Rehabilitation Program the County will provide $569,258 in 2011-2012 for this purpose. Repairs, including lead abatement, totaling up to $50,000 can be made to a home, insuring the home is brought up to United States Department of Housing and Urban Development's Housing Quality Standards (HQS). Over the last several years the County has allocated over $7 million for this purpose. Not only does the strategy assist seniors with very limited incomes, but contributes to the maintenance and enhancement of the neighborhoods where these homes are located. Emergency & Minor Repairs

Henrico County also provides funding for emergency repairs to homes for individuals or families that meet income eligibility guidelines and is not limited to elderly or disabled persons. These repairs usually provide for the repair or replacement of exterior or interior items that pose an imminent threat to the health and/or safety of persons. The cost of repairs can go up to $10,000. The County will provide $328,274 in 2011-2012 for this purpose. Assisting Residents to Become Homeowners

Henrico County also provides significant funding to assist residents to become first time homeowners. In 2011-2012 Henrico will provide $190,000 for a program of downpayment and closing cost assistance, administered by HOME Inc.

Henrico County has also allocated $150,000 to facilitate the development of new housing (either through new construction or rehabilitation of vacant homes) for first-time homeowners.
